BREAKING DOWN PHYSICAL
AND SOCIAL BARRIERS THROUGH

"FUN"CTIONAL FITNESS

About

Diverse Fitness & Wellbeing is an inclusive small group fitness class open to young people with disabilities in the North East of England. Founded by Nicholas Kane,
Diverse seeks to break down the physical and social barriers that many children with learning disabilities face through the empowerment of "FUN-ctional" fitness.

Operating in local church halls and school facilities, we strive to be as accessible as possible to local communities.

Our vision stretches far beyond the North East, to create a nationwide programme for all schools and communities to be part of. It’s about rewriting the script for UK obesity and
educating individuals from their early years on how to make healthier life choices.

WARM UP

Experience the dynamic start of our Diverse sessions.

Our engaging warm-up includes fun games to boost excitement, prevent injuries, and prepare you mentally to ‘get you in the zone’. It enhances mobility and flexibility, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable session.

STRENGTH

At Diverse, our strength training sets us apart from weightlifting, bodybuilding, or powerlifting. We prioritise controlled movements and safety, with an emphasis on proper technique. While we typically use light resistance, some members may progress to heavier weights, all
under our close supervision. This approach offers several benefits, including improved muscular strength and endurance, enhanced flexibility, better cardiovascular health, and increased functional ability to
complete activities of daily life.

hiit

There is extensive evidence to suggest that HIIT is effective in improving a young person’s physical fitness and cardiometabolic health as well as their mental health and cognitive performance. Our HIIT sessions are designed to get young people active and sweaty, raising their heart rate and creating an exciting, invigorating experience that enhances their
overall well-being.

COOLDOWN / MINDFULNESS

Cool-down activities focus on slow movements and stretching, allowing the heart rate to return to normal after vigorous activity. At Diverse, we use full body stretches to work on improved flexibility. Our cool-down
activities also help to prepare everyone for the transition back into their normal setting after the class. We often use this time to practice mindfulness, allowing the class to learn techniques to really tune into what they are sensing and feeling in the moment.
